Abstract
In this study we will demonstrate how the names of the town-symbol in Gogol’s literature are “descriptive names” because Gogol has a mythical con- ception of the cities so that the names refer to the myth to which they are linked. From Dikan'ka (from Dikij that means wild) of the famous Evenings in which Gogol celebrates the world of the carnival, to the Mirgorod (mir-gorod that is world-city), a city closed in its walls, beyond which lies only disaster, up to Petersburg, a town “invented”, inhabited by ghosts and shadows so real as to be able to roam on winter nights and steal other people’s coats.
