Abstract

The paper examines the different pseudonyms and pen-names used by Gabriele D’Annunzio during his lifetime, and explains their origin and meaning: Albio Laerzio Floro, or Floro Bruzio (the ‘author’ of the first poetical works, Primo vere and In memoriam); Porfirogenito (as he frequently named himself in his memoirs, even in an ex-libris); Shiun-Sui-Katsu-Kava, Happemouche, Sir Ch. Vere de Vere, Mario de’ Fiori, la Salamandra , Mambrino, Filippo La Selvi, Musidoro, Il conte di Sostene, Il marchese di Caulonia, Miching Mallecho, Myr, Mab, Swelt, Puck, Lila Biscuit, Morillot, Bottom, Il Duca Minimo (the pen-names he used for his newspaper articlesin Rome from 1882 to 1888); Ariel (as women and friends called him in letters, and he himself in the biography Ariel armato); Angelo Cocles (the ‘author’ of his last book, Il libro segreto).
