“Fata Morgana”. Deonomastica scientifica e letteratura medievale

Abstract

The name of Fata Morgana is given to an optical phenomenon that simulates the appearance of fantastic castles and cities. It is observed in many places throughout the world but is connected especially to the Strait of Messina, in Italy. The article examines the origin of the name, which derives from the literature brought by the Normans during their occupation of Sicily in the Middle Ages.
