Abstract
The name of the troubadour Marcabru has been the subject of much debate in the past. Scholars who, from 1992 to 2011, attempted to establish his identity, came up with two opposing hypotheses. My paper surveys the terms of this controversy and proceeds to focus on the creation of the chanson de geste dedicated to Beuve de Hampton and on the possibility of his playing an important role in the formation of the name (or nickname) Marcabru.
