Abstract
The aim of the paper is to show the role of proper names in Teatro naturale by Giampiero Neri. A screening of the occurrences of the word name in Neri’s lines reveals that the context constantly presents certain features: the presence of a spatial border, seen as the last brink before the fall into an actual or metaphorical cliff, often signified by the presence of the color white. Whereas the name is linked symbolically with emptiness and disappearance, nicknames and pseudonyms try to preserve the personality and safeguard the individual. Neri seems to believe that the gap between the name and the individual identity cannot be bridged. Therefore, while signatures cannot guarantee any individual truth, inscriptions, whether in books or on walls, succeed in establishing relationships between individuals – not only between names.
