Abstract

In the novel Le rapport de Brodeck by Philippe Claudel, the onomastic aspect plays a remarkable role as the name is used to express the belonging to, or the exclusion of the individual from, the group. The names of some characters are unknown; we only know their various nicknames. On the other hand, for the rest of them, the name is the incontestable sign of the individual’s diversity as compared to the other members of the community. Behind this closed onomastic game, a touching parable is grafted on a major historical event: the Shoah.
