Abstract

This paper examines the different naming strategies adopted in Latin, Old High German and Romance spells before and during the Middle Ages: the altered name, the speaking name or effective name, the taboo denomination. In particular, the study focuses on the protagonists of a series of incantations for the prevention of bleeding that presuppose a common subtext. The names of these characters appear to the reader to be hermetic or alienating and an attempt is made to explain them.
