Abstract

In the context of Marian iconography, this paper looks at Italian painting over a period of seven hundred years with special reference to images that portray the Virgin Mary with Child. The text proposes an analysis of various typologies of denomination; it attempts to investigate the reasons for the names in some cases and to verify the seriality of some names in a selection of works by painters of differing fame and popularity.
