Abstract
The article presents the results of research into the names of fantastic creatures in the Italian version of The Witcher Saga (orig. Wiedźmin), a series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski and video games inspired by the adventures of the Witcher. The first part of the text presents the Polish fantasy writer A. Sapkowski and provides some general information about the Italian translation of his novels by Raffaella Belletti and the principal outlines of the fantasy genre. In the following sections the author put forward a proposed classification of the analyzed onymy an d its discussion in formal and cultural terms. The article contains data concerning the motivations and source of inspiration behind the names of Sapkowski’s creatures, transferred to the Italian version of the Saga (also in the video games Tbe Witcher); it highlights the fact that most onyms of this category are only adapted or transferred directly to the Italian version of The Witcher Saga.
