Abstract
References to personal identity are certainly not accidental in Flannery O’Connor’s literary productions. An ambiguous personality is often hidden behind a homophonic name and its degeneration into anagrams and charades often contains an unconcealed hint of O’Connor’s black humour. Some of her characters hide or change their first name and surname, in order to disguise their own identity. More- over, sharing a name may represent either a link or a damnation, while replacing it with an acronym is a clear message of contempt.
