L’onomastica nel Recueil di Gherardi

Abstract

The aim of this study is the analysis of onomastics in the Théâtre Italien de Gherardi, a collection of plays which had a great success in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries in France. In particular, the study aims to highlight that the scarcity of references to authors and contemporary characters in the collection, in relation to the numerous citations of authors and characters of ancient times, is due to the suffocating censorship existing at the court of Louis XIV.
